Urban Youth Harvest
Urban Youth Harvest Graduation Day
After completing a successful eight week job program in partnership with Cycles of Change, the Private Industry Council (PIC) and the Work Investment Board (WIB), PUEBLO congratulated the 31 students who worked hard to learn new skills, interact with each other and prepare for academic success and productive careers. Our students rode bicycles to harvest the excess fruit donated by Oakland home owners and delivered it to Oakland's low income seniors who, too often, lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables. They learned how to repair bicycles, develop business plans and were assisted in writing resumes and going in to job interviews. They participated in activities and field trips with other organizations like OBUG and the People's Grocery. All in all, they harvested over 1500 lbs of apples, peaches, oranges, figs, grapefruits, lemons, pears and plums. Created: 10-05-2009 |
